Registro Storico Cicli R.S.C. has been carrying out since 2008 an ambitious and unique project dedicated to vintage bicycles, aimed at recording the main Italian manufacturers and at matching models with frame numbers and production years. This work is the backbone of our different Registers:
- the Historical Register, the main database, sorted by brand and containing all registered bicycles with descriptive sheets and photo galleries;
- the Special Register, containing bicycles recognized as vehicles of historical importance to which a Certificate of Historicity is delivered, and finally
- the Regional Register, whose aim is to list all manufacturers throughout the country, sorted by region.
Through its work, the association intends to document and enhance the historical cycling heritage, besides contributing to spread the vintage bicycle culture.
Historical Register
The Historical Register is an archive, sorted by manufacturer brand, containing a dataset of bicycles produced in Italy since the early 20th century and intended to represent as faithfully as possible the production characteristics of the time. To this end, bicycles are recorded by matching model, frame number and year of manufacture, upon analysis of their characteristics and cross-reference with catalogs, similar examples and any other useful information. Registers for the various brands are thus compiled, with models illustrated through descriptive sheets and extensive photo galleries.
Each register is managed by one or more specialists who check the suitability of the bicycles and assess their registration. On one hand this work has historical value, gathering information that would otherwise be lost in time, while on the other it also provides a concrete reference for bicycle owners who wish to have more information about their bike or to carry out a faithful restoration.
Special Register – Certificate of Historicity
Thanks to an agreement between Federciclismo and R.S.C., bicycles recognized as being historically significant can obtain a Certificate of Historicity and be added into a Special Register. These are important, flawless bicycles, complete or completed with period-correct components identical to the original model. These bikes represent the history of the most prestigious Italian brands, the symbol of a heritage that deserves to be recognised and enhanced.
Owners will receive the Parchment Card, containing the bicycle’s data, and the RSC Badge, i.e. an enamelled bronze plate to apply to the bicycle. Both will bear a reference number through which the bicycle can be identified in the Special Register. The certificate is reserved to members of the Registro Storico Cicli association and is issued upon approval of the necessary requirements by the RSC staff.
Regional Register
The Italian excellence in the bicycle manufacturing sector is worldwide recognised. It is mainly represented by the most renowned historical brands with the highest production output. However, it is important to stress how it is spread throughout the territory in a capillary manner, thanks to the many lesser-known but still excellent framebuilders.
Such characteristic, probably unique in the world, only confirms how much passion and technical skills in the sector were and still are developed. In order to give them the proper recognition, the Regional Register of Italian bicycle manufacturers was created in 2021, aiming at recording all manufacturers throughout the country by region, and featuring details of badges and decals that craftsmen used to apply as their distinguishing mark.
